Research Pathways and Methodological Reflections on Cultural Tourism from a New Cultural Geography Perspective

Seminars topic: This talk examines tourism studies from the perspective of new cultural geography. It reviews how cultural geography approaches have reshaped understandings of cultural and heritage tourism, and reflects on the evolution of research pathways and methodological choices in this field. Drawing on representative cases, the speaker discusses how spatial, cultural, and social dimensions intersect in tourism research, and offers reflections on future directions for integrating qualitative and quantitative methods in cultural tourism studies.

Scholars Background: Prof. Cai Xiaomei is a Professor and Ph.D. supervisor at the School of Tourism Management, South China Normal University. She also serves in key roles in cultural and tourism research centers at the university. Her work focuses on cultural geography, tourism geography, urban and rural cultural spaces, and sustainable development of cultural and tourism industries. Prof. Cai has led and participated in a number of national and provincial research projects and has published extensively on cultural and tourism development, tourism planning, and destination management.
