Student Voices

From a young Latvian architect’s perspective, moving to China and studying in one of the world’s top universities, refining my management skills alongside 62 other PIEGL students representing 41 different countries was an enormous but fulfilling challenge. During the past two academic years, a lot has happened. I have been surprised by serendipities I could never have imagined, built intercultural understanding from conflict through better communication about the needs and values of others, and been challenged to fill the gaps in my assumptions and experience. I would live and enjoy every moment of the PIEGL program again if I could. From the minor frustrations to the resounding victories, I have been enriched by all of it. Thank you, Zhejiang University. If you’re considering the PIEGL program, my advice is this: Go with the flow, not against it. Be present in every moment.

- Ervins Gorelovs, PIEGL, Class of 2017

The PIEGL team was chosen as one of 12 finalists out of 203 teams from across the world and went on to represent Zhejiang University at the prestigious SCB Future Leader Challenge in Thailand in June 2018.

Immersion in new environments is a vital way to adapt, to thrive, and to understand those environments, especially when they are subject to rapid change. Being a student in the PIEGL program gave me a fresh perspective on working in a multicultural environment and direct experience of China from both insider and outsider perspectives. Beyond academics, representing PIEGL on the International Student Council and in the SCB Future Leader Challenge in Thailand highlighted how giving back is the surest route to new opportunities. I am proud to say I was part of the program.
