Student Voices

From a young Latvian Architects perspective moving to China, studying in one of the Worlds best Universities and refining managerial skills among 62 PIEGL students representing 41 countries was... yes, a Challenge.

During the past 2 academic years a lot has happened:

- Unmet expectations interacted with mind-blowing serendipty;

- Intercultural household conflicts resulted into acknowledgement and better understanding of diversity of people, their needs and values;

- and most importantly: Gaps between assumptions and experience were challenged and filled.

If given a choice, I would be honored to live and enjoy all as the frustrations as small, and big victories again. Thank you, Zhejiang University, for the value.

My recommendation to future PIEGLs: Dont fight the gravity, but exercise it. Be present.

In order to adapt, thrive and understand a rapidly-changing environment, it is necessary to associate yourself with the culture and values of that particular environment, at least for a period of time. Being able to form part as a student in the first cohort of the PIEGL programme has enabled me to gain a fresh perspective on what it means to work in a multicultural environment, as well as experiencing how China views the world and vice versa. Beyond academics, serving on the International Student Council representing PIEGL and being a member of a selected team to represent PIEGL and ZJU in the Siam Commercial Bank Future Leader Challenge in Thailand, has reminded me about the endless opportunities that exist if you are willing to give of yourself. There is beauty in uncertainty if you choose to be intentional and present wherever you find yourself. I am proud to say that I was part of it all.
