Qualitative Reading and Theoretical Thinking Based on Experiential Observation

Seminars topic: This lecture focuses on qualitative reading and theoretical reflection grounded in experiential observation. It aims to explore the methodological significance of experience-based perspectives in social science research, especially in relation to consumption sociology, tourism sociology, and sharing economy studies. The discussion will highlight how first-hand observation and lived experience provide important foundations for developing theoretical innovation in sociology and related fields.

Scholars Background: WANG Ning is a Professor in the School of Humanities at Southeast University and also affiliated with the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Sun Yat-sen University. He is a Doctoral Supervisor, expert reviewer for the National Social Science Fund of China, and a researcher at the Guangdong Academy of Cultural Studies. He was selected as one of the scholars introduced to China under the Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researchers program in Sociology (2020–2024). His research covers consumption sociology, tourism sociology, and sharing economy studies. He has led major and general projects of the National Social Science Foundation of China, as well as projects funded by the Guangdong Provincial Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science. He has published widely in both Chinese and international journals, including Tourism and Modernity: A Sociological Analysis (2000), Chinese Social Sciences, Sociological Studies, Journal of Sociology, Annals of Tourism Research, Tourism Management, and International Sociology.
