Human versus Large-Language Models Creativity: A Large-Scale Comparison of The Divergent Thinking Ability in Humans and Large-Language Models
2025-05-09

Seminars topic: This talk presents findings from a large-scale study comparing the divergent creativity of humans and leading AI language models like GPT-4. Using the Divergent Association Task, researchers analyzed over 10,000 human responses and 200,000 AI responses. The results reveal that while humans score only slightly higher on average, they exhibit much greater variability and top-tier originality—areas where AI consistently falls short. These findings highlight key differences in the way humans and AI generate creative ideas.

Scholars Background: Professor Dawei Wang (王大维) is an Assistant Professor at HKU Business School and an external faculty member at Northwestern University’s NICO. His research explores human-AI collaboration and how AI can enhance creativity, healthcare, and scientific research, both independently and in collaboration with humans.
