Workshop successfully held with the University of Sydney Business School

A workshop was successfully held by the Department of Finance and Accounting at the School of Management, Zhejiang University (ZJU-SOM) on 20th November. Co-organized by ZJU-SOM and The University of Sydney Business School, the workshop has gathered 8 scholars from two schools to present in related areas.

The workshop began with a brief opening by Prof. Jun Chen, Head of Department of Finance and Accounting, addressing heavily on research collaboration between the two schools. The morning session was ended up with a warm greeting from Dean Wei Jiang, emphasizing the ongoing and future student/faculty exchange and research collaboration between the two schools. Representatives from The University of Sydney Business School also expressed interest in the Global Summer Camp held annually by ZJU-SOM.

Dr. Westerholm presented on the idiosyncratic volatility anomaly and the resale option; Dr. Ava Wu explored how analysts’ social connections to the firms they follow affect their forecasts, recommendations, and career outcomes; Dr. Segara laid eyes on the evidence of analyst tipping, finding out that trading patterns reveal that domestic institutional investors buy recommended stocks from four days before upgrades and sell from one day before downgrades. Dr. Arthur investigates whether disaggregated components of OCI have differential persistence while Dr. Zhang examines how the increase in homeownership subsidies alter consumers’ behavior on the choice of mortgage loans.


On the ZJU-SOM side, Dr. Qihui Gong probed into the role of international prestigious auditors in cross-border mergers and acquisitions by firms with weak institutions. Dr. Meifen Qian presented on the payoff of investing in funds with a high CSR score portfolio based on evidence from China’s open-end equity mutual funds. And Dr. Shuai Shao explored the power of accounting information in explaining stock returns.
