The School of Management, Zhejiang University held IPHD2014 Summer School on July 14 on Zijingang Campus, to welcome 82 outstanding third-year college students from other universities in China. The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. QIAN Wenrong, Associate Dean of the School who is in charge of teaching and learning. The Dean of the School Prof. WU Xiaobo attended the opening ceremony and gave a welcome speech.
On behalf of the School, Prof. WU gave a warm welcome to those outstanding college students, who were selected from almost one thousand applicants. Then Prof. Wu reviewed the history of Zhejiang University from different perspectives to show the elegance of Zhejiang University, and to emphasize the spirit of “faith of truth”. Prof. WU pointed out that the mission of our school is to "cultivate the strength to lead healthy development of Chinas future, which is consistent with our goal: to cultivate senior management professionals and leaders who have global perspective, innovative capability, entrepreneurial spirit and social responsibility.
After the opening ceremony, Prof. WEI Jiang from the Department of Business Administration made a report on doctoral research. He started the report by asking a question how to explore the nature of "gossip". He explained motivations of doing research and how to do research – research is to give answers to the questions in society, research must focus on the context and it needs rational thinking. Prof. WEI also believed that being a PhD candidate is a kind of self-cultivation. Doing research needs to observe (observation), to be insightful (insight), so that good research can continue to emerge (emergence). Professor WEI hoped that the future doctoral students could have a good attitude and a global perspective, since research should be done in an international context; and students could learn to be self-motivated, to enjoy the pleasure of research, and to enrich their life.
After that, Prof. HUANG Can, from the Department of Management Science Engineering delivered a lecture on “China’s Patent Regulation and Multinational Corporation Patent Application Process in China”. First, Prof. HUANG introduced the history of China’s patent regulation and its review process. He explained why the number of patent applications increased significantly. Then he shared his research findings with audience – the notion of Quadic patent family, which quantitatively analyzed the technology of patent protection in the USA, Japan, Europe and a fourth country. China has replaced Australia, as the fourth important country where multinational corporations applied for their patents. Finally, Prof. HUANG pointed out the opportunities and challenges of China’s patent and intellective property research. The audience actively interacted with Prof. HUANG, expressing their understanding of patent protection.
In the end, Yining XU, a 5-year PhD student representative gave a speech, titled “why I choose IPhD”. She would join our IPhD program in the coming September starting by going to our partner school, Faculty of Economics & Business, University of Groningen to pursue a 2-year research master’s degree. She shared her reflections and understanding of being a 5-year PhD student.
