Platform Information Provision and Consumer Search: A Field Experiment

Workshop’s Topic: Despite efforts to optimize search results based on consumer input, less emphasis has been put on helping consumers describe and identify their demands. Collaborating with a leading e-commerce platform, we study a new search refinement tool that recommends refined searches. A long-term experiment reveals that, although immediate effects were absent, the tool increased long-run consumer purchases. This increase is materialized by improving search effectiveness, not activity. This increase is driven by both the tool’s direct effect and indirect consumer learning effects.
