Enhancing Workers' Well-Being in On-Demand Economy: Regulations, Platform Operations, and Customers' Prosocial Behaviours | Episode No.39
2024-02-22

Workshop’s Topic: As independent contractors (rather than employees), gig workers (e.g..Uber drivers) enjoy great flexibility in work schedules but are not eligible for wage protections or employee benefits. What are the welfare implications of such an employment status for gig workers? How can their well-being be further enhanced? In the first part of the talk, I will approach these questions by joining the recent policy debate on whether gig workers should be reclassified as employees. In the second part of the talk, I will shift the attention from regulations and platform operations to customers’ prosocial behaviours that may potentially enhance gig workers well-being.
