Abstract: Big Data is Big Business, and reaches into every corner of life these days – often uninvited. The talk ranges from distinguishing between data and information and suggesting what we really mean when we use the term Big Data. In the current Age of Science and Technology it helps to look back at how communication technology has developed and made the modern world a very different place to that of a short time ago. We discuss the importance of connectivity and ask the question “whose data, is it?” and ethical and moral issues which cause concern. The power of data and information is explored and in a business sense the ability of businesses to monetize it can be discussed. The talk seeks to explore good and bad manifestations of Big Data. We look at the importance and helpfulness of Big Data in Healthcare and other areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and IoT -The Internet of Things. Examples of new companies exploiting Big Data with Innovation will be discussed – from the UK and one from China. Conclusions will be reflections on where the future lies for Big Data and people. The impact of people is a key issue for consideration.
