Abstract:  The literature on the empirical relationship between corporate social responsibility and corporate financial performance is large but the evidence is mixed. We propose a new approach to understand the issue. This approach is flexible enough to encompass other views on this issue in a coherent way. We apply this approach on US data from 1990 to2015 and find strong empirical support for this approach. The implications of this approach are outlined and discussed.
